The Key Biblical Sequence
Section titled “The Key Biblical Sequence”An observational note, not a verdict: the sequence below is what the two central texts state on their face. Whether that surface sequence governs the rapture question is precisely what the traditions dispute --- the pre-tribulation counter-readings (an Israel-focused discourse; a Day of the Lord that opens with the church already gathered) are presented at full strength in Chapters 2 and 4.
“Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened… and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. Jesus’s sequence: tribulation → signs → Son of man comes → angels trumpet → gather elect

Paul’s sequence: falling away first → man of sin revealed → then “that day” (Christ’s return)

What the Earliest Christians Believed
Section titled “What the Earliest Christians Believed”- No gathering placed before the antichrist’s appearance in the first 1,700 years of church history (a handful of disputed “removal” texts exist --- see Chapter 3; absence of explicit pre-trib language is an argument from silence, not by itself a disproof)
- Augustine (c. 426): Christ “will not come to judge quick and dead unless Antichrist, His adversary, first come” (City of God 20.19)
- Catholic Catechism (1992): “Before Christ’s second coming the Church must pass through a final trial”
- Eastern Orthodox: Same sequence — antichrist first, then Christ’s return
Common Ground

- We are to watch and be ready (the partial-rapture view alone grades the outcome of watchfulness --- see Chapter 4)
The Core Question

- Does the gathering happen before the antichrist is revealed? (Pre-tribulation)
- Does the antichrist appear first, with the gathering during his career but before God’s final wrath? (Mid-tribulation; pre-wrath)
- Or does the gathering come at Christ’s single visible return, after the antichrist’s course has run? (Post-tribulation and the single-return traditions)
For every believer: Watch, be ready, love one another — regardless of which view on timing you hold.
